Takagi Akimitsu -The Tatoo Writer (edited by Pascal Bagot)
Takagi Akimitsu (1920-1995) is one of the greatest Japanese writers of detective novels of the 20th century. Crazy about tattoos, he documents the tattoo world in Tokyo during the 1950s and 1960s. Forgotten in the author's library, unknown until their discovery in 2017, the photographs collected in this volume make it one of the most significant witnesses to the history of tattooing in 20th century Japan.
By photographing the greatest tattoo artists of the era and their clients with a medium format camera (like a Rolleiflex), Takagi created a record of his time that is as groundbreaking as it is rare. Few images and faces from the Shôwa era (1926-1989) have reached us, illuminating this art of shadows, which was forbidden until 1948.
The book The Tattoo Writer includes 130 photographs taken by Akimitsu Takagi in the world of tattoos in Tokyo during the 1950s and 1960s. Published for the first time. The images are accompanied by a text by Pascal Bagot regarding the general context of writing and capturing images, a text by his daughter Takagi Akimitsu about the tattoo environment her father used to visit, and then an essay by Gérald Peloux on the connections between crime literature and tattoos.
