[...] Photographing the countenances of the citizens of Novorossisk was not in itself sufficient to render the project concrete. The shot and the image would have to subordinate themselves to a- conceptually prior - mental and speculative elaboration in order to become, not the final goal but the con-comitants of a whole series of behavioral choices among which season, the day and the time chosen in order to bring this operation to fruition,were meant to be as significant as the photograph itself. And perhaps even more so.
Similarly, the subjects' name,age and profession that Boutos scrupulously registered every time in his notebook, together with the locally produced camera and printing paper, became elements necessary in defining the significance of an intervention which increasingly assumed the character of a cognitive research.
