Zhou Yang - Faërie
ZHOU Yang’s photographic monograph Faërie was published in September 2025 by Posts & Telecom Press in China.
The book brings together 82 black-and-white large-format photographs, the result of a decade-long photographic project exploring traditional Chinese literati gardens.
Through her photographic approach, ZHOU Yang does not simply document these gardens as historical or architectural spaces, but explores their unseen, spiritual and mythical dimensions. Rooted in Taoist philosophy and Chinese tradition, literati gardens were conceived as spaces of escape from everyday life—places where perceptions of time and space could be transformed.
The title Faërie evokes a parallel, mysterious world within the real one, a place where the visible meets the imaginary and where myths, spirits and supernatural beings can coexist. Yang’s photographs transform the gardens into landscapes of memory, imagination and spiritual inquiry, inviting the viewer to look beyond their physical appearance.
Faërie is a photographic exploration of the relationship between nature, cultural heritage, myth and collective imagination.
