VASSILIS ZAVERDAS - FRAGMENTS OF TIME
The photographer, and every artist, begins copying those he admires.Very slowly, and with the passage of time, he begins to discover himself through his struggle with his doubts, with his idols and with the dominant fashions of each season.
Four decades ago the journalistic perception of photography was the dominant direction. Events were stealing the show. A decade later, street photography shifted attention from events to form. Construction absorbed the description. A decade later, the mirror took the upper hand out of the window. Psychoanalytic introversion became the popular content.
But the art of photography, like any art, does not consist of events, forms or ideas, but of photographs. The photographer loves photographs, like the painter, the paintings and the poet the lyrics. The world that surrounds him and moves him is not enough to describe him. He has to transform him into a dream that will conquer by enclosing and extending himself into his work. Because the identity and biography of every photographer are only his photographs.
Vassilis Zaverdas, fortunately, did not replace the doubts with certainty, nor did he succumb to the sirens of the train. And his idols helped him find the way to turn the representation into redevelopment. The lonely creatures of his photographs are both existing and mythical. His emotions became photographic tension. The form of rhythm. And the set of photographs a fairy tale. Beginning, middle, but with open end. The Fragments of time, as he called his work, is his dream in which he invites us to take as viewers part.
