Hara Sklika, photographer, says in the introductory text of the book:
"I didn't intend to just travel, nor to do tourism. I wanted to go where time has stopped. To see how, in conditions of absolute deprivation, to justify the conditions of absolute deprivation.the photogenic smiles and the bright eyes I saw in exotic photographs. To test my endurance...."
The album's editor, Kostis Antoniadis, notes:
"What initially piqued my interest in the book FARANJI, was Hara Sklika's overall approach to her photographic journey in Ethiopia. A brief overview of the general approach of Hari Sklahlia's journey in her journey to the photo exhibition in Greece. journey, and then a book that describes not so much Ethiopia as the journey itself.....Sklika follows the planned route of the journey and tries to see some cracks in this theatrical setting, to sneak into a hut, to take the hand of a real woman: "She follows me everywhere, she writes at one point, I wonder why. Her name is Ari, son of Gambo. She becomes my shadow while I am in the bazaar. I give her my bottle of water for her child. She gives me the bracelet that on her arm and wishes me no pain when I have a third child." And it's there, in those rare moments, that she takes the most powerful photos in the book. Her notes accompany the photographs, and without direct references to them, they follow a parallel narrative path. A journey to an exotic place that more like an inner journey. And when the dust settles, taking the road back, Sklekka reflects on the questions that remain unanswered. And she concludes: "On the endless miles of dirt roads I leave the promise of my return."
